The University of Thessaly Library & Information Centre organised in Volos, Greece (11-12 December 2008) the first scientific symposium dealing with Information Literacy initiatives taking place in Greek Higher Education Institutions (Universities and Technological Educational Institutes), while reviewing the relative contribution of the EPEAEK II (2nd Community Support Framework co funded by the European Union) library projects.

Over 100 delegates (mainly instruction librarians working in Greek academic libraries) participated in the symposium sessions. The abstracts (in both Greek and English), the full-text (in Greek with English abstracts) and the Power Point presentations (in Greek) of the papers presented at the symposium can be downloaded from the "Symposium Programme" section of the current web site.

The symposium's main aims and objectives were:
  • to investigate the current state of the Information Literacy endeavors taking place in Higher Education libraries and institutions in Greece taking into consideration the effects of the implementation of the relative EPEAEK library projects
  • to report on the evolution, progress and results of specific programmes of Information Literacy in Greek HE libraries
  • to initiate a discussion between the stakeholders of Greek Higher Education Institutions about the future development of Information Literacy (IL) activities exploring issues such as librarian-faculty collaborations, IL course-integration and correlation with lifelong learning in Greek tertiary education
  • to form a nation-wide network of IL experts who besides discussing, exchanging opinions and examining the progress of HE IL programmes in Greece, they would additionally promote the expansion, development and integration of IL in the educational and research operations of HE Greek Institutions (Universities and Technological Educational Institutions).
